dc_wright. Put the top down about 1/2 way to relieve the tension on the top gasket. Pull it back out of the channel in the body back to about the center of the trunk. Then push it back into the slot in the body starting with the end of the top gasket back about 1/2 inch from where it is now in your photo. To open it by hand (manually) pull the cord under the left side of the rear seat (as instructed by e36p) then go in your tool kit under the boot/trunk lid and get the winding handle (shaped like a double ended allen/hex key) , on the front panel of the headlining pop out the blanking plug "emergency use only" or something to that effect and Anyway to open the boot/trunk manually if I remove the battery. by Croot23 » Mon Mar 15, 2021 8:20 pm. According to the owner's manual, if you have the Comfort Access option you should be able to close roof by holding down the "lock button." Where the electric roof is fitted with a hydraulic ram to raise and lower it, the manual roof has a gas strut to assist with the opening and closing.
